Georgia Centenarian Study (Pt. 7): Eloise Hudson – A Century of Living

This is an excerpt on “centenarian Eloise Hudson and a century of living” from the documentary movie, The Georgia Centenarian Study (produced by Dr. Leonard W. Poon and Alan Stecker). You can read more about the Centenarian Study on our website ( www.publichealth.uga.edu ). A keystone research project at the Institute of Gerontology ( www.publichealth.uga.edu ) is the Georgia Centenarian Study (1988 to 2008) of longevity and survival of the oldest old, led by the Institute Director Emeritus, Leonard W. Poon, and funded by the National Institute of Mental Health and the National Institute of Aging. An unprecedented number of elders in the coming decades will face the risks of disease, frailty, and dependence. The population at the highest risk is the oldest of the old who are increasing at the fastest rate among those who are 65 years and older. Centenarians by definition are survivors who have lived to at least 100, which is more than 20 years longer than the average life expectancy. A fundamental challenge is to understand how centenarians live longer and what specific biological, psychological, and sociological characteristics they possess that would allow them to survive longer. Another basic challenge is whether we could generalize the knowledge gained in our volumes of aging research to individuals of average life expectancy, which is in their 70s (eg, the MacArthur Study), to individuals who live 20 to 30 years longer. At the extreme longevity of the human species

A Look at careers in sociology in What are some majors/careers like Sociology?

Question by SoccerManiac: What are some majors/careers like Sociology?
Hi, i was wondering some majors/careers that are somewhat comparable to sociology. i still have a few years to decide my major, but i love every single social studies class i had, and probably will have. So i want it something to do with social sciences.

thank you in advance :)

Anthropology is one.

The major difference is a focus less on a particular culture and social situation and a willingness to agree that people can be inherently different based on environment, history, and genetics. Expect a hybrid between biology and social science for anthropology.

As a career, anthro can be applied (working cross-culturally or internationally) or academic and includes the fields of archaeology and some sub-areas of human genetics.

Social Psychology is another.

Instead of ascribing all behavioral differences to differences in learning, social psychology (and psychology in general) look at differences in individual behaviors based on both a biological and learning basis. Expect more in the way of quantitative (research based on measurement and statistics) than sociology.

Social psych as a career can be academic, lead to work in human resources and/or business management, and potentially therapeutic careers.

Women’s studies is similar in background as sociology but with an agenda attached.

I really do not know what women’s studies people do as a career.

Political Science is another related field.

Essentially, it’s an applied sociology with the focus on government and institutions rather than basic understanding of social situations. Expect more statistics and possibly even game theory to help understand political decision making.

Career-wise, these are the people who try to understand and influence political institutions… Campaign managers, analysts, staffers, etc.

Finally, criminal justice is related.

Once more, it’s mostly applied sociology with a focus on rule violation and how to identify it, fix it, and prevent it. Career-wise, you’re looking at law enforcement, law, advocacy for victims and criminals, and other related job aspects.

There’s also Social Work, but you might just want to google that one.

Question by phs625: Thinking of A Minor/Certificate Program?
I’m a Business Administration major just trying to see what I should do a minor or certification program in that my college has to offer. Here are the choices:
Accounting
Child Care
Criminal Justice
General Business Administration
Gerontology
Health Services Management
Liberal Studies
Management
Marketing
Media Studies
Office Computer Systems
PC Hardware/Networking
Personnel Management
Private Security
Substance Abuse Counseling
Web Design

Which one of these would be better for me and why? Thanks in advance. :)

Best answer:

Answer by Mary
Accounting would be a good minor because it will be easy to get a job in accounting since the job market for accountants is growing. If you are not interested in accounting then I would go with office computer systems, anything with computers can also help you get a job.

Life Lessons from a Biscuit Factory – Alain de Botton

Complete video at: fora.tv Alain de Botton, author of The Pleasures and Sorrows of Work, discusses lessons he learned from observing workers at a United Biscuits factory in the UK. According to Botton, highly specialized jobs lead to a sense of aimlessness in many workers. “The problem of the modern world…is it becomes very, very hard to see the impacts that you have on anybody’s life.” —– For most people the word work is synonymous with jobs, labor and occupations. The things we do to pay the rent. The mundane routine can often overshadow the nuances of the work that we do. In this talk at RMIT in Melbourne, philosopher Alain de Botton reminds us of the importance of appreciating the details of work and workplaces. In this way we can have a greater understanding of the impact our daily tasks have on culture and society, or perhaps decide that it’s time for a new career. – Australian Broadcasting Corporation Alain de Botton is a British writer and television producer who employs a philosophical and accessible approach to examining a variety of subjects from the abstract–love and happiness–to the material–architecture. In August 2008, he founded an unconventional new educational establishment in central London called The School of Life, which offers intelligent instruction on how to lead a fulfilled life. De Botton is a frequent contributor to numerous newspapers, journals and magazines and is a member of the Arts Council of England’s literature panel. De Botton
