Question by Whoa!: What can you do with a degree in human services disabilities specialization degree?
Ok the college site says this:
Graduates with the disabilities specialization will be able to: (1) undertake employment in the fields of social services, substance abuse, mental retardation, physical disabilities and gerontology; and (2) function effectively as members of any human services team by rendering direct care in therapeutic, remedial and rehabilitative activities.
I would like to know what job I would be able to get with this degree? Because something about this degree is pulling me towards it and I want to know what I could do with it.

With a BA you probably would only be an intake clerk at facilities that specialize in these areas. These are specialized subjects which would require an MA to work directly with patients. If there are any of these facilities in your area, go and talk to them and see what they require for what position. Good luck!

I have been and am still in your position, and I’ve recently graduated… yikes. Anyhow.
If you’re interested, look up an MEd in Counselling for Adults. It’ll give you an opportunity to become a counsellor in different areas, such as school environments, hospitals, etc. Otherwise, if you’re interested in a much more research-based route, perhaps you’d like to go into clinical research for an MSc. In this aging population, studies on memory/learning in elderly folk are increasing. Other studies include rehabilitation of stroke patients and elderly folk incurring trauma. I’m not sure if it’s possible, but you may also be interested in therapy? It would fall under a similar field as MEd in Counselling, but the title may be different. And then of course, there are healthcare professions: nursing, PSWs, occupational therapy, physical therapy, med school. Gerontology is a growing field, given the increased age of the general population.
Oh, and you have the option of not pursuing a job in either field. Some people find that their interests lie far outside their degree and do well. Like… pursuing an MBA if you were interested in business. I knew someone who pursued pharmaceutical chemistry in their undergrad, decided it wasn’t worth it and became a CA afterwards. Now, she’s managing accounts for a large pharmaceutical industry. Go figure.
Sky’s the limit. The hardest part is narrowing it all down and following through.
Best of luck.

A bachelor’s degree in Sociology? What careers can I have?
I googled a few, but a probation officer or social worker isn’t really my thing. I love sociology, just not a lot of the careers that I have seen in practice of the major…
That’s one idea…can’t you only teach at high school level with it?

Question by Jess H: Where to obtain a Masters Degree in Gerontology?
I am looking for any recommendations of good schools to attend to receive my masters in gerontology? I will receive my social work degree (BSW) in may, and am looking at grad school. I have searched and found a lot, but am looking for any recommendations.
Elima: thanks for all the listings they are wonderful! Yes I know what gerontology consists of, that is why I am hoping to obtain my masters in the field. My internship this year is at an assisted living facility and I love working there. I feel as if obtaining my masters in gerontology would help me to become a more effective social worker within this specific area. My college used to have a minor in gerontology but cut the program because not many students were interested.

dear You know Gerontology is the physical, mental, and sociological study of aging. It includes the study of changes in adults as they age, the ways that society changes with an aging population, and the ways we apply this information to programs and policies for older adults. A degree in gerontology prepares the student for careers working with older adults or as advocates for the elderly.

You’re contradicting yourself. Chiropractors are ridiculous unscientific quacks. You should have learned this in your Kinesiology studies.

It sounds like you might be able to work in Nursing Home administration. We have an aging population in the US so there will be lots of work in that field. You might also do well at a community center that has programs for the aged/aging.
Working with the elder can be very rewarding. Good luck!

You would be MUCH better off with a degree in social work and to minor in gerontology (do all your internships in gerontological settings. A degree in social work (BSW – but eventually MSW) will give you MANY more options.

Question by NJ: Psychology degree and gerontology?
What types of jobs are available to a person who has a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology with a concentration in gerontology (the study of aging)? I am in school right now and my major is Business but I am starting to have second thoughts. I was discussing my past jobs with my grandmother (all except 1 have been in retail) and she asked me if I was going to like sitting behind a desk all day with a degree in business. That got me thinking, and I don’t really think I would be happy with that. Of all the jobs I have ever had, my favorite was working as an Activity Assistant in a Nursing Home. I only did that for 3 months because the Nursing Home closed, but I really enjoyed it. I like working with elderly people. Are there many jobs available to someone with a BS in Psychology, or is it better to stick with a BS in Business. If I switched to Psych, I would probably keep business as a minor.
Best answer:
Answer by my_princess1
If you really enjoy psychology, go with it! It can be tough to find a career in the field without a higher degree than a BS, but the minor in business may help you a little.
Have you considered nursing? You rarely sit down and get to interact with lots of elderly…there will be more and more elderly people around as the baby boomer’s age…
