Question by Whoa!: What can you do with a degree in human services disabilities specialization degree?
Ok the college site says this:
Graduates with the disabilities specialization will be able to: (1) undertake employment in the fields of social services, substance abuse, mental retardation, physical disabilities and gerontology; and (2) function effectively as members of any human services team by rendering direct care in therapeutic, remedial and rehabilitative activities.

I would like to know what job I would be able to get with this degree? Because something about this degree is pulling me towards it and I want to know what I could do with it.

With a BA you probably would only be an intake clerk at facilities that specialize in these areas. These are specialized subjects which would require an MA to work directly with patients. If there are any of these facilities in your area, go and talk to them and see what they require for what position. Good luck!

Question by ehh: What careers could I have with a sociology degree?
A bachelor’s degree in Sociology? What careers can I have?
I googled a few, but a probation officer or social worker isn’t really my thing. I love sociology, just not a lot of the careers that I have seen in practice of the major…
That’s one idea…can’t you only teach at high school level with it?

Best answer:

Answer by whaaTever21
my major is sociology also and i am going to be a probation officer. you can also be social worker but i heard they dont get paid alot. but you should do some reasearch on each job to find out what you would enjoy doing.

Question by 518914: What are some different jobs available for a gerontologist?
I am in high school and am trying to think of future careers I may want. I love working with the elderly and figured gerontology would be good for me. Only problem is I don’t wish to be a nurse or doctor and I don’t know any other jobs available in gerontology other than nursing.

Best answer:

Answer by Andrew
I am currently a Gerontology major in college and although I have not taken too many classes for the major yet, I do know of some careers available in it; you can be a lawyer and practice elder law, there are many career oppertunities for running a nursing home such as a nursing home administrator, activities director at a nursing home, running an assisted living facility, architecture for building properties for elders, social worker for elderly people, hospital careers in administration or marketing.

Found gerontology nursing in What are the different levels of nursing? Can someone please explain them?

Question by Rachel Kate: What are the different levels of nursing? Can someone please explain them?
I am finishing my BS in Biology with a minor in Gerontology. I have been looking at going into nursing school, but I do not understand all the different types of nurses (RN, ASN, BSN, MSN, etc). How long does each degree take – and if I wanted to work in the ER, or in ICU… would I have to be a certain one?

Thanks!!

Best answer:

Answer by mtwaites
The BSN program is a 4 year, very intensive program. This program will teach you different blocks of information, and then you will need to go into the hospital environment to practice what you have learned during that block of information until eventually you have gotten to the end of it, and then you will be required to do a prectorship where you will be able to practice doing the stuff that you have learned to do. If you successfully pass this, then you’re able to sit and write the RN licencing test.

ASN is the associates which is 2 years, but it is not the full nursing program. This would allow you to do something like the Licenced Practical Nurse, Certified Nursing Assistant or the Registered Nursing Assistant, but in order to be an RN, you would need to get the BSN program, which is listed as above.

The MSN level is the masters of nursing, and this will allow you to do something like a nursing coordinator, supervisor, clinical supervisor etc.. You will need to have this level to do any sort of coordinator, supervisor etc.

I hope that this helps you a little bit more.

Question by blah blah: Pediatric Oncology career/life/how do you do it?
I’m a junior in high school and getting ready to go or at least start my path to college. My dream has always been to go into pediatrics and oncology has always fascinated me. So even though it is a emotionally hard job, I feel like it would be very rewarding to help children who probably don’t know how much longer they have to live. I feel like if I can make them happy, then my job is fullfilled. But my question is, how do you pediatric oncologists, or any doctors for that matter enjoy life at home. I want a family and another life besides work, but do you manage to find time for that? I don’t want to miss out on what life has to offer, but I still want this career SOOO badlyy.
any advice? how do you guys manage?
thank you in advance. it’s really appreciated. =)

what a coincidence, i am i junior in high school and i want to become a pediatric oncologist, also!

basically you have to go to a four year college for pre-med, or biology, something along those lines, go to a med school. All doctors have the same classes in med school. During internship, you spend time with doctors in the same field, that you want to go in. And then residency, then you are a doctor.
it will take approximately 12 years to become a pediatric oncologist

Question by ByGod’sGraceWe’reSaved: How do I land a pharmaceutical sales jobs?
I am trying to get into pharmaceutical sales and want to know the best way to do this. I have no direct experience in pharmaceutical sales however I do have 3 years of outside sales experience plus 15+ years of direct customer service. I have a BS in Social Science with a minor in Gerontology. I have medical terminology and had started out working on my nursing degree before changing majors. I have worked as an executive administrative assistant, accounting clerk and HR assistant up until the last three years and want a new career path. And before it is suggested that I have to be somewhat attractive, I modeled in high school and college. So with all of this said…Any suggestions or leads? Any and all help is greatly appreicated! Thanks in advance!

best bet is to know someone in the industry. see if you can ride along with a rep for a day (shows initiative). read the following book w/ regard to interviewing: “Knock ‘em Dead” by Yates or Yeates. i say this because i was a nurse before i got into pharma sales – no sales experience whatsoever – and, after reading the book, THAT’S when i started getting asked back for 2nd and 3rd interviews. it takes persistence… i waited an entire year before someone took a chance on me (and me and my team blew our numbers out of the water… trip to paris… trip to rome… multiple cash awards). anyone can do this job; and one doesn’t need to be attractive to do it (although, unfortunately, that’s a criteria on which a lot of managers base their decision(s)). also, try monster.com. type in “sales” in the box, and look for or hi-lite pharmaceutical sales where you’re given the option – you’ll see what i’m talking about. many people choose to get on with a smaller company… prove themselves w/ regard to exceeding sales expectations… then jump to larger pharma companies.

one last thing: if you can dispose of $ 200-300, try to get a professional resume writer to re-do your resume. mine added key words and that revision, along with reading the aforementioned book – helped a TON.

good luck.

Question by Premium: What do you do in sociology?
As an high school student, I’m beginning to look more deeply into possible careers. Sociology seems appealing to me but I am unsure what a sociologist does and if the salary is enough to support myself?

Like, is this a deskjob filing reports and such or a more interactive career? What am I expected to do in the future?

I’m in high school and I’m currently really intrested in becomine a pediatric oncologist, and just really want to know all the basics about it. Any info anyone has, whether its about the best colleges, or average salary. I still want to have time for a family and I want to be sure this will still be possible as well.
My goal is to someday work at St. Judes Children’s Research Hospital, so if anyone has any info. about here that would be greatly appreciated as well. I know St. Judes is located in tennessee, but I was wondering if there are any alternative locations?
Thanks for all the help!

If you are that interested, try a job shadow with a real pediatric oncologist. Get the chanvce to talk to him/her about the good, the bad, the uglies of the job. Talk about the educational requirements.
Want more information about St Judes? Check out their website.
