Question by Whoa!: What can you do with a degree in human services disabilities specialization degree?
Ok the college site says this:
Graduates with the disabilities specialization will be able to: (1) undertake employment in the fields of social services, substance abuse, mental retardation, physical disabilities and gerontology; and (2) function effectively as members of any human services team by rendering direct care in therapeutic, remedial and rehabilitative activities.
I would like to know what job I would be able to get with this degree? Because something about this degree is pulling me towards it and I want to know what I could do with it.

With a BA you probably would only be an intake clerk at facilities that specialize in these areas. These are specialized subjects which would require an MA to work directly with patients. If there are any of these facilities in your area, go and talk to them and see what they require for what position. Good luck!

I have been and am still in your position, and I’ve recently graduated… yikes. Anyhow.
If you’re interested, look up an MEd in Counselling for Adults. It’ll give you an opportunity to become a counsellor in different areas, such as school environments, hospitals, etc. Otherwise, if you’re interested in a much more research-based route, perhaps you’d like to go into clinical research for an MSc. In this aging population, studies on memory/learning in elderly folk are increasing. Other studies include rehabilitation of stroke patients and elderly folk incurring trauma. I’m not sure if it’s possible, but you may also be interested in therapy? It would fall under a similar field as MEd in Counselling, but the title may be different. And then of course, there are healthcare professions: nursing, PSWs, occupational therapy, physical therapy, med school. Gerontology is a growing field, given the increased age of the general population.
Oh, and you have the option of not pursuing a job in either field. Some people find that their interests lie far outside their degree and do well. Like… pursuing an MBA if you were interested in business. I knew someone who pursued pharmaceutical chemistry in their undergrad, decided it wasn’t worth it and became a CA afterwards. Now, she’s managing accounts for a large pharmaceutical industry. Go figure.
Sky’s the limit. The hardest part is narrowing it all down and following through.
Best of luck.

Question by 518914: What are some different jobs available for a gerontologist?
I am in high school and am trying to think of future careers I may want. I love working with the elderly and figured gerontology would be good for me. Only problem is I don’t wish to be a nurse or doctor and I don’t know any other jobs available in gerontology other than nursing.

I am currently a Gerontology major in college and although I have not taken too many classes for the major yet, I do know of some careers available in it; you can be a lawyer and practice elder law, there are many career oppertunities for running a nursing home such as a nursing home administrator, activities director at a nursing home, running an assisted living facility, architecture for building properties for elders, social worker for elderly people, hospital careers in administration or marketing.

Health Services Management
Liberal Studies

Accounting would be a good minor because it will be easy to get a job in accounting since the job market for accountants is growing. If you are not interested in accounting then I would go with office computer systems, anything with computers can also help you get a job.
