Question by Alexis Darby: if i major in sociology what types of careers will be open to me?
i was talking to my aunt and she assumes that the only thing that will be open to me if i do pursue a career in sociology will be social work, is this true?

I googled a few, but a probation officer or social worker isn’t really my thing. I love sociology, just not a lot of the careers that I have seen in practice of the major…
That’s one idea…can’t you only teach at high school level with it?

my major is sociology also and i am going to be a probation officer. you can also be social worker but i heard they dont get paid alot. but you should do some reasearch on each job to find out what you would enjoy doing.

Hi, i was wondering some majors/careers that are somewhat comparable to sociology. i still have a few years to decide my major, but i love every single social studies class i had, and probably will have. So i want it something to do with social sciences.

Anthropology is one.

The major difference is a focus less on a particular culture and social situation and a willingness to agree that people can be inherently different based on environment, history, and genetics. Expect a hybrid between biology and social science for anthropology.

As a career, anthro can be applied (working cross-culturally or internationally) or academic and includes the fields of archaeology and some sub-areas of human genetics.

Social Psychology is another.

Instead of ascribing all behavioral differences to differences in learning, social psychology (and psychology in general) look at differences in individual behaviors based on both a biological and learning basis. Expect more in the way of quantitative (research based on measurement and statistics) than sociology.

Social psych as a career can be academic, lead to work in human resources and/or business management, and potentially therapeutic careers.

Women’s studies is similar in background as sociology but with an agenda attached.

I really do not know what women’s studies people do as a career.

Political Science is another related field.

Essentially, it’s an applied sociology with the focus on government and institutions rather than basic understanding of social situations. Expect more statistics and possibly even game theory to help understand political decision making.

Career-wise, these are the people who try to understand and influence political institutions… Campaign managers, analysts, staffers, etc.

Finally, criminal justice is related.

Once more, it’s mostly applied sociology with a focus on rule violation and how to identify it, fix it, and prevent it. Career-wise, you’re looking at law enforcement, law, advocacy for victims and criminals, and other related job aspects.

There’s also Social Work, but you might just want to google that one.

As an high school student, I’m beginning to look more deeply into possible careers. Sociology seems appealing to me but I am unsure what a sociologist does and if the salary is enough to support myself?

Question by Whitney: Sociology careers dealing with suicide?
I know there’s many subfields to sociology and I’ve looked into some but are there any that deal specifically with suicide? Or suicide/mental illness? And if so, what type of specific careers might be available?

I’m thinking about becoming a Sociology major and have always been interested in suicide/mental illness so I’d love to find a career that connects both the major and my interest. I thought about Psychology as well but that deals too much with specific workings of the brain, not society.

Psychologists do not deal with brain specifics, unless you are a neuropsychologist. A clinical psychologist almost exclusively has patients with mental illnesses, unless you are an instructor. I am not sure that sociologists actually have patients/clients they help to diagnose and such.
You could specialize in suicidal trends as a psychologist, but that probably wouldn’t happen for a few years after you graduate. Your training in graduate school will be broad and you will cover a lot of different areas.
You may find it interesting to volunteer for a crisis hotline- they almost always have suicidal individuals calling to get help. You can usually work there if you are working towards a B.A. and have gone through the crisis hot lines training. You will definitely get your feet wet there. There is also an agency called S.O.S (Survivors of suicide) you could contact your local agency and find out if they accept volunteers.

As for suicide and mental illness, I would definitely recommend taking as many psychology courses as you can- this is a Psychologist’s daily dealings, not a sociologist.

I am a clinical psychologist and this is what I see on a daily basis. I have had many patients/clients with suicidal thoughts, have tried to complete suicide, and many who’s family members and/or friends have completed suicide.
